Tarot Cards & Coffee Dates: Why This Designer Believes in Real-World Magic

"Is the spark overrated?" Is something the tarot cards cannot answer. But we can. And we do.

Nominated by an industry peer, Andrew, McKenzie brings the eye of an interior designer to her approach to dating. And like any good designer, she knows that photos rarely capture the true essence of a space—or in this case, a person.

McKenzie is making a bold case for bringing back the 30-minute coffee date. Her reasoning? An app profile tells you nothing about someone's true charisma and attractiveness. There have been several men she's met in real life who captivated her—men she would have never swiped right on. It's a refreshing reminder that chemistry exists beyond algorithms. And if this is starting to feel like a not-so-subtle plug for Eligible In, it is. 😁

And while the "spark" has earned a negative reputation as of late, like it’s some kind of debunked myth, or like a lowbrow concept in our modern dating culture…the Ted talk of dating…McKenzie acknowledges there needs to be something—perhaps "ember" is the better word?—that keeps both parties curious enough to come back for second and third dates.

When she's not shuffling Tarot cards for friends (purely for fun) or transforming spaces through her design work, McKenzie dreams of sharing life's smaller moments. The Sunday trips to the farmer's market. The mundane catch-ups about their days. Those seemingly boring tasks that single people often do alone but secretly wish they had company for—like attending a friend's play.

The Tarot cards simply help us to uncover certain truths. McKenzie knows that the real magic happens when we go offline and into the world and take risks–fully knowing that we may be let down, have an atrociously bad date, or get our heart broken. Because love can and usually does spark out of nowhere, when we least expect it.
